Early Childhood Intervention/First Steps
Indiana's
First Steps and Bona Vista’s Early Childhood Intervention
programs provide a system of early intervention for infants,
toddlers, and preschoolers with special needs. Working
together, a child’s parents, teachers, physicians, and
therapists develop a road map for the services to be
received. |
|
Services
are available to children with:
-
Speech and
development delays
-
Vision and
hearing impairments
-
Sensory
integration problems
-
Autism
-
Chromosomal abnormalities or genetic disorders
-
Neurological disorders
The
delays/disorders must be assessed by two professional disciplines (for
example, a physician and a physical therapist) who will confirm the need
for intervention to try to bring the child to the typical level of
development.
Through the Early Childhood Intervention program, free developmental
screenings are offered to the public four times a year.
Infants and toddlers considered “biologically at risk” of disability are
also entitled to services. This includes:
-
Children
with very low birth weight
-
Small for
gestational age
-
Asphyxia
-
Complications before, during or following birth
-
Children
whose mothers had limited prenatal care or prenatal substance abuse
